Introduction
地球は約38億年前、生命が誕生して以来、遺伝子とともに環境の歴史を刻んできた。 地球の中で生き物が存在している空間は、地表の海と空を含めた薄皮のような層で、人類もそのわずかな空間にもの生き物と共存している。私たちは、地球の歴史に比べれば、ほんの些細な存在が、地球から多くの恵みを享受し、長い繁栄の感史を築いてきた。その結果、地球に負担をかけ続け、生態系の破壊、気候変動など、様々な環境問題を引き起こした。私たちはこの事実を知識としてだけでなく、地球環境を守る取り組みとして推進していかなければならない。多種多様な生き物が暮らす、美しく豊かな地球の存続。これは人類にとって使命であり、夢である。夢を形にして育むために、100年後、1000年後、人類の未来を視野に入れ、生命の歩みを持続させよう。明るい地球の未来のために、子どもたちのために。
Earth has a history of genes and environments since the birth of life 3.8 billion years ago. The space occupied by organisms on Earth is a skin thin layer which includes the sky and the sea. Humans also share this small space with other living things. We are a very trivial creature in the history of Earth, but we received many gifts from Earth and prospered for a long time. As a result, we have given too much loads to Earth, and ignited many environmental problems, such as destructions of ecosystems and climate changes. We must face this fact as not only a knowledge but by promoting to protect the global environment. Continuation of beautiful and rich Earth with biodiversity is our mission and dream. To realize our dreams in shape, we must continue our footsteps of life with our future in perspective for the next 100 years and 1,000 years for a bright future of the earth and our children.

Prologue
ランドスケープの夢
文明の発展だけを目指すのではなく、より幸せな生き方を求めて、多くの人たちがランドスケープに命の灯を輝かせてきた。ランドスケープデザインは人々の「夢」を実現するためにある。土地の歴史を、生き物主体の環境を尊び、心安らぐ美しい風景と文化をつなぐ多様で生命的な世界である。この本は、多くの人たちと夢を実現するダイナミックなプロセスと感動をまとめたものである。
Many people strived their lives not for the development of the civilization but for their happiness and better ways of life.
Landscape design gives shapes to people’s “dreams” by connecting beautiful and soothing scenery and the culture of a place, its history and ecosystem. It is a world of diversity of lives.
This book compiles processes and emotions in realizing dreams shared by many people.
森が育む自然観
「森羅万象」という言葉に示されるように、「森」には「宇宙」につながる現象の根源が存在する。ブナ帯の落葉広葉樹林は、春に雪解けとともに命が芽生え、夏に茂り、秋に実を結び、冬に白銀の世界となる。四季の変化は動植物の多様な自然生態系を維持し、その中で培われた「輪廻」の世界観は、日本の基層文化を成す縄文、アイヌへと引き継がれ、日本人の哲学に大きな影響を与えた。
Our view of nature was nurtured by forest. In the “forest”, the origin of phenomena leading to the “universe” exists.
Deciduous broad leaved forest in the Japanese beech tree zone sprouts buds in spring after the snow melts, grows in summer, bear acorns in fall, and turns to silver white in winter.
Changing seasons sustain ecosystem of the wildlife, rich in biodiversity.
Our view of the world nurtured by natural cycles of the forest reflects “reincarnation”. It stays in Japan’s fundamental culture of Jomon, then inherited by Ainu people, and greatly influences philosophy of Japanese.
